The Leftovers Foundation aims to reduce food waste and prevent greenhouse gas emissions by rescuing surplus food from restaurants, grocery stores, and other businesses, and redistributing it to those in need. This initiative not only helps to alleviate hunger and food insecurity in our communities but also mitigates environmental impact by decreasing the methane emissions that result from food decomposition in landfills. By forming partnerships with local businesses and community organizations, we work to ensure that good food is not wasted but instead reaches those who need it most, fostering a more sustainable and equitable food system.
In Pakistan, it is estimated that our food system wastes approximately 20.2 million tonnes of edible food per year. Following similar patterns to Canada, only around 4%, or approximately 0.81 million tonnes of that food, is rescued and redirected. Some of the remaining 19.39 million tonnes of food is used for animal feed, biofuels, or compost, but the majority goes to landfills.
We believe one of the best ways to reduce food waste is to get the food to community organizations working with vulnerable populations, ensuring that it can be used where food is most needed.
Whether you want to volunteer, donate food, donate financially, or receive food, there is a program for you.
